Christian Ponder threw for 2,717 yards and 14 touchdowns last season. If it weren't for the five losses last year, or the same injury that ended Sam Bradford's season, or the same off-field nonsense that has clouded his every season at Florida State, it might not seem so improbable. It might not sound so odd to hear Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher matter-of-factly point out that Christian Ponder, with a career record of 13-9 as a starter, is the best quarterback he has ever coached

One item that we missed in this morning's police-blotter-esque Headlinin' post: Georgia QB Zach Mettenberger, one of two highly touted redshirt freshmen poised to compete for the starting job this season, was arrested early Sunday morning near Valdosta for, among other things, underage possession and false ID. If that doesn't win this year's Worst Way To End Spring Break Award, it's sure to be at least a finalist. (Actually, if Valdosta is Mettenberger's idea of a party, he may also be in the running for the Worst Way To Spend Spring Break Award, but that's a different post entirely.) Mettenberger is the first UGA player to get pinched this year, and if history is any guide, he won't be the last

View full size photo » I know a lot of people have wanted me to get to Gerhart a little sooner, but never really imagined we would contemplate taking him, but with Jones gone, and Leon's status still a little uncertain, it's becoming a real possibility that we will look his way when it comes to the draft in April. Gerhart has done nothing but produce since he was a kid, he had a record career at Norco high school in California, despite this most scout agencies only ranked him as a 3 star prospect, although during the recruitment process he did carry the name 'Touchdown Toby'. Names Mr Football for the state of California in 2005 he decided on Stanford thanks to the combination of academics and excellence in a two sport program (he is also a baseball player) Gerhart has also heard what is being said about him, and feels that he is not getting the recognition that he deserves, not listed as a top 5 back in either Tod McShay's or Mel Kipers running back class, and not even listed as their value picks: "They say I don't have top-end speed or the burst," Gerhart added.
